McCoy's Farm & Ranch: Generations of Ranching
In 1927 Frank McCoy moved his family and a small contract roofing business from the big city of Houston to Galveston, Texas and the McCoy Roofing Company was born. In the 1940s, Frank’s son, Emmett, took an active interest in the family business with a vision of selling roofing and other building materials directly to the general public and McCoy’s entered the retail business with the McCoy Supply Company. When Frank retired, Emmett became president of both McCoy Roofing and McCoy Supply. He promptly expanded the product mix at McCoy Supply Company and opened a second store near Texas City, and one of the nation’s largest family-owned retail chains was born. And with it, a legacy of not only love for the building industry but of the land.
As the company grew, Emmett relocated its headquarters to San Marcos in 1972 and the McCoy family made Central Tex- as their home base. More than a decade earlier, Emmett and Miriam bought their first ranch property on the Blanco River in Hays County, and the family’s longstand- ing personal interest in ranching and
the cattle business grew from there. In 1987, the McCoys purchased additional ranches in West Texas, including the 7 Springs Ranch and the historic Rockpile Ranch, and to this day the McCoy family, partnered with daughter Brenda McCoy Remme’s family, maintains flourishing cattle operations in Jeff Davis County, Reeves and Pecos Counties as McCoy Remme Ranches LTD. In 2011, the fam- ily’s holdings totaled more than 240,000 acres and ranked No. 41 on the Land Re- port 100, which lists the 100 top private landowners in America.
Emmett passed away in January 2012 at 88, but his legacy thrives, in both the building supply and the ranching indus- tries. McCoy’s Building Supply operates 86 stores in five states and is currently helmed by son Brian (President and CEO) and his daughter Meagan McCoy Jones (Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer). McCoy Remme Ranches is managed by son-in-law Kaare Remme, who raises Black Angus cattle in a traditional cow-calf operation with a strong focus on range manage- ment and stewardship. As quoted by The Land Report in 2012, “Emmett’s beloved wife Miriam still shares her husband’s love of the land. The McCoys gather at her home and their ranch properties to celebrate holidays, special events, and the beautiful country of Texas.”
With strong ties to the agricultural and ranching communities, McCoy’s has a special interest in selling a diverse selection of name-brand farm and ranch materials. Many of its buyers, managers and field representatives are farmers or ranchers themselves and understand the complexities of running a successful farm and ranch operation. Along with traditional building supplies, McCoy’s carries everything from shavings, feed- ers and buckets for everyday use to larger specialty items like round pens and roping chutes from the most trusted and respected names in the industry (including Oklahoma Steel, Stay-Tuff, Tru-Test, Red Brand and Priefert). McCoy’s commitment to serving farm- ers and ranchers includes staffing a traveling Farm and Ranch Sales Spe- cialist, Cliff Mulanax, who can answer questions such as whether to consider adding an arena to your ranch or how to go about choosing the right equipment for your operation, whatever its size.
