Region II Senior Spotlights
Because of COVID-19, Region 2’s season came to an abrupt end. We did not get to compete in our region finals, so the people who were in the top ten after our 10th rodeo at San Angelo are the people who qualified for state. For some people, this was very disappointing, but others were happy with the way that their seasons ended up. I am going to highlight some of the seniors who ended up at the top of their events.
For the all-around, tie-down, team roping, and steer wrestling champion, Colton Greene, the season
ended on a high note. Even though he ended up on top, Colton was still sad that our season was cut short. He said, “I’m sure not happy with how the coronavirus ended our season, but I’m glad that everyone has taken the right precautions. At the end of the day, a rodeo cancellation is a tiny problem in comparison to our health.” For Colton, his three veteran geldings make his job easy and were a huge part of his success this year. He is really hoping that State is not canceled so that he can have one more shot at making it to nationals. He feels like he has a better game plan and mindset this year. Colton would like to thank his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, his family, Neal Felton, and Webb Ropes. Next year, Colton will be attending Weatherford college and studying construction/business as well as college rodeoing.
Another senior that ended up in the number one position heading into the state finals was Peyton Hooper. She was the Region 2 champion breakaway roper and also qualified for state in the goat tying. Peyton’s breakaway horse, Rooster, helped her win the title. She has had Rooster since he was 4, so the win was extra special. Peyton was also disappointed that our season had to be cut short, but she is glad that we are taking action against the virus so that we are able to compete at state and qualify for nationals. Peyton will graduate this May then attend NMJC to college rodeo and finish her Associate’s Degree in Science. After that, she plans on transferring to Texas Tech to complete her doctorates degree in Occupational Therapy, while still college rodeoing. She would like to thank her family, Brent Lewis, Colton Walters, and Jesus Christ.
The third and final senior I am going to highlight is Bradi Good. Bradi Good was the region champion in the barrel racing and the reserve champion in the breakaway roping. Bradi said, “My senior year at Region 2 was bittersweet for sure. I’ve grown up through the region and to never go back to high school rodeo is kinda hard to get past!” This year Bradi rode three different horses throughout the barrel racing, two of which were Judi Reeds’. Bradi cannot thank Judi enough for all of her help. Unfortunately, Bradi had a tragic accident with her good breakaway horse, Hero, they had to put him down mid-season. Bradi said, “Without people like the Charlesworth’s, I wouldn’t have had anything to rope on at the high school rodeos, so I’m grateful that they let me ride my old mare, Candy. That’s the thing about Region 2, whenever one of us is in a bind, everyone tries to help out. I’m thankful to have been apart of it for almost 9 years. I love that Region 2 has brought so many friends and memories into my life. Our region is a family and I wouldn’t trade that for anything. I’m forever grateful to graduate out of Region 2.”.
Region 2 wishes all of our seniors good luck and congrats on a great season! We are very proud of everyone’s accomplishments and are looking forward to a successful, healthy summer.
