Region V Report

My name is Tyce Scarber. I am 12 years old and I am the Secretary for Region V Rodeo.

As with any sport, you work all season long with an end goal, whether it be that All Star Championship game in baseball, that State Championship in basketball, or to be a State or even National champion in rodeo. My goal this year was to be a State Qualifier in all my events and of course from there go on to Nationals.

Finals weekend had a lot of things going on that we all enjoyed together. After Saturday’s performance, the rodeo families got together and cooked out. Lots of good times, good food and lots of laughs. We also do several fundraisers throughout the year such as plants sales, goat dressing, and Rodeo Prom. Finals weekend we have a bake auction. And boy do we love some desserts. We also elect officers for the following year, which means campaigning goes on. It’s always fun to see the different campaign signs and strategies the competitors do to get elected. I was elected Region V president for the 2020-21 season and am very excited and grateful for this opportunity.

Lots of blood, sweat and tears go into the sport of Rodeo. But there is absolutely no sport like it. Not just the sport itself, but the rodeo family and friends that are made and the other true athletes that don't get enough recognition, the horses. I spend most evenings in the practice pen working on all aspects of my events, and usually with some of my good friends. Finals weekend is always a little more stressful than the others. My parents stress to me to be consistent all year so that finals weekend isn't the one weekend that makes you or breaks you.

Be. Consistent. Those words rang true. Luckily throughout the season, I had a pretty good run of rodeos. And I don't mean winning every event, but being at the top. First event of finals weekend was goats. I had a smoking goat run going for me and my goat go up. I had not had a goat get up all year, so this was quite the upset to set the pace for my day. The discouragement set in and I had to overcome it fast. Although day one didn't go as I hoped, day two was a new day.

I finished Finals weekend qualifying in all my events; Champion Heeler, Reserve Champion in Goat Tying, 3rd in Breakaway, and 3rd in Ribbon roping. I am very excited to compete at State in Gonzales, TX and hope to continue on to Nationals. I want to thank God for allowing me the ability to compete and do what I love. I wish my fellow Cowboys and Cowgirls good luck at State, we are super blessed to be able to compete on such a level.
